Analysis of an energy storage system using reversible calcium hydroxide in fluidised-bed reactors

The widespread use of renewable energy requires the support high-capacity storage systems. This work proposes a thermochemical system for concentrated solar power plants based on reversible hydration/dehydration process calcium hydroxide. It is single fluidised bed reactor concept with alternating dehydration-hydration processes, charging and discharging reactions, superheated steam as fluidising agent. has been modelled using Aspen Plus™, including equilibrium data hydrodynamic performance reactor. model used to evaluate effect different parameters reactor, such geometry, average particle size, or inlet streams conditions, system. thermal integration was optimised pinch analysis. For proposed layouts, round-trip efficiencies values 68 % are obtained. economic analyses show specific investment costs between 4170 $/kWe 3250 in range 31 MW 45 MW, which competitive those expected molten salts this range.
